Activating, prototyping and rewiring conversations with material, people and contexts has become Judith’s fuel to stimulate new directions in design. Working with the diversity of  hands and minds, for a wider and deeper meaning of the design territories. Continuing the conversations that question, reveal and analyze a new connectivity through design tools.

Judith van den Boom (1977) born in Utrecht (NL) and studied for her BA Product Design at Design Academy Eindhoven and Academy of Art& Design in Arnhem with following design driven MA Applied Arts at Royal College of Art in London for deeper material knowledge and international connecting network. For Judith, design is not merely about creating products but about engaging and exploring the hinterland between design's function and disciplines. Shaping with fragile materials and the different techniques and expectations one can have of material, are one of her languages to express her passion for the form and usage.

In the past, she was based in  London for a longer period and actively working with other designers, thinkers and activators in design perspectives. Previous to her design training she was educated and active in organic green cultivation and design. Here she grounded her passion for environment and its natural qualities that she finds of high value for people’s lives and well being. From 2004 until present she had several extensive work experiences in China through design projects, residencies and manufacturing. Building up deeper conversations through working together. Here she created work such as ceramic productions, documentation, photography and connections in bridging co-creative cultural networks.

Furthermore Judith exhibited throughout the last years with her product work intensive internationally; NY, London, Milan, Montreal, with following publications in diverse international design magazines. Also she is an active design tutor and teaching with design students on design diversity and new personal development strategies, facilitating design workshops and initiating new study methods. She is participating in setting up new design approaches by being board member in SlowLab (NY/NL) that activates new ways of design practice and thinking.

Judith founded with her partner Gunter Wehmeyer (GER)  BoomWehmeyer Studio, where they meet in the different backgrounds and mindsets between urban design, scale, design thinking, material research and product design. Their work rethinks peoples design expectations and expresses this into material form, academic teaching, design writing, local design projects and with a different sense of humor. Exploring the design is one of the important things that drive the work of Judith and Gunter, creating design that adds to making a change. Change in usage, change in expectation, change in how we perceive our own context

Judithʼs work drive cover diverse areas in and around her discipline and became an essential base for her work; Questioning the existing design systems and develop new ways of working, researching material for exploring new kinds of use and developing new ways of engaging with peoples needs, academic and creative professions.

Currently she is based between locations in Germany and China and focuses through diverse projects on encouraging action into project subjects. With having the focus on renewing the diversity and positioning for the design landscape, she attempts to build an intensive action network that connects to thinkers, idealists and realists for brighter future living.

Passionate to bring together and activate connections in order to start a new conversation.
